Course Description

This talk will take an in-depth look at color, what it is, how it affects us, and how to use it in our own interiors. We will look at color through the ages and what it has said about society at those times. We will also discuss using color to achieve visual goals and how to select the right color for the right place. The instructor was well-prepared, and the slides were visually appealing and effective. I look forward to attending another lecture by this presenter! - OLLI Patron

About the Instructor

  • Lynn Kaplan, ASID, has had many careers. The first was in education. After acquiring a degree in literature from SUNY Stony Brook and teaching High School English, she went on to get a Master’s Degree in Education from Hofstra University. It was here that she honed her skills in presenting material and engaging students. The second career began with a certificate in Interior Design and a Master’s Degree from Pratt Institute. The establishment of Lynn Kaplan Designs, Ltd. came quickly along with full Professional Certification from A.S.I.D, the American Society of Interior Designers. Work in Manhattan and on Long Island followed, doing projects from personal homes, lofts and apartments to designing building lobbies and retail showrooms. After establishing this firm of three designers she began teaching at Long Island University, C.W. Post campus. Lynn taught there for over 20 years, eventually becoming Chairman of the department. She taught Interior Design including classes in drawing, furniture history, color theory, and lighting. Lynn’s next career was as a tour guide/docent at the New York Botanical Garden, Bronx, NY. Upon being accepted into the program, all guides are given an extensive 4-week training session. Further, every time a new exhibit is offered at the garden docents are given special training so that they can explain the exhibits on their tours. This training gave her insight and information on many aspects of gardening and horticulture. Her final career has been as a speaker, sharing her knowledge of Education, Art, Design and Horticulture with audiences in the South Florida region.
